NEWS LEGAL & LEGISLATION "Astroturf" in the Rose Garden? White House Insists “Everyone” Agrees, Ammo Ban is "Common Sense"

On Monday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that President Obama supports the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives'--which is to say, President Obama's--ongoing attempt to ban M855-type AR-15 ammunition. Obama "has long believed that there are some common sense steps that we can take," Earnest said. "[E]veryone should agree that if there are armor-piercing bullets available that can fit into easily concealed weapons, that it puts our law enforcement [officers] at considerably more risk."

LEGAL & LEGISLATION NEWS Hundreds of Lawmakers Sign Letter Opposing Proposed Ban on AR-15 Ammunition

This week, in an overwhelming show of bipartisan opposition, 238 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives signed a letter to the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, opposing the Obama Administration's attempt to ban commonly used ammunition for the most popular rifle in America, the AR-15. The NRA worked closely with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) to gather signatures on this critical effort.

LEGAL & LEGISLATION NEWS Law Enforcement Officers Refute Obama Administration's Justification for Ammo Ban

Since announcing its proposed ban on commonplace 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition, the Obama administration has been careful to claim that this attack on gun rights is in the interest of law enforcement officer safety. On Monday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest continued this line of rationalization, stating: "This seems to be an area where everyone should agree that if there are armor-piercing bullets available that can fit into easily concealed weapons, that it puts our law enforcement at considerably more risk. So I'd put this in the category of common-sense steps that the government can take to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans while also making sure that our law enforcement officers who are walking the beat every day can do their jobs just a little bit more safely."

NEWS LEGAL & LEGISLATION Anti-Gunners Lie to Promote BATFE Ammo Ban

Thanks to the BATFE's plan to ban M855 ammunition, affordable rounds for the AR-15 may have been hard to come by over the last week, but there sure wasn't a shortage of hogwash being thrown around by gun control supporters. On Fox News' "America's Newsroom," former Obama campaigner claimed that M855 ammunition "has been used in every mass shooting we've had in the country over past years." Whether she lied deliberately or misspoke as a consequence of being excited about being on TV, we leave to readers to decide. However, we'll explain Clifton's error with the brevity it is due: That is absolutely untrue. Most of these events have not involved firearms even capable of using that round.

NEWS New Lawmakers Inform President of their Opposition to the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty

On Monday, a group of 12 freshman Senators expressed their opposition to ratification of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty in a letter to President Barack Obama. Secretary of State John Kerry signed the UN ATT on behalf of the U.S. on September 25, 2013. In their letter, the new Senators cited an October 15, 2013 letter to the president signed by 50 Senators from the 113th Congress that outlined their concerns regarding the treaty in detail. Further the group wrote, “we pledge to oppose the ratification of this treaty, and we give notice that we do not regard the U.S. as bound to uphold its object and purpose.” Altogether, 55 Senators in the 114th Congress have made clear that they oppose the UN ATT.
